Last week Deputy Minority Leader Julie Gottlieb came to the defense of State Representative Cristin McCarthy Vahey D-133, for criticism McCarthy Vahey received for her vote in support of a $1.2 million reduction of state education funding to the town of Fairfield.I have great respect and affection for McCarthy Vahey, as I do for Gottlieb, however, the impact of Governor Malloy's funding reduction upon Fairfield's town budget is likely to be significant, and the matter has dominated discussion by members of all town bodies for the past month.
It is difficult to talk about potential state funding reductions and at the same time avoid talking about the positions taken by those who represent us in Hartford.
As Mark Twain said, when there's an elephant in the parlor, you have to say something about it.
I referred to it as "a matter of concern," but that is not to say that I had doubts as to McCarthy Vahey's intentions.
The fact is that the approach adopted by Governor Malloy in an effort to balance the state budget has made it a matter competing interests between the state and it's municipalities and placed McCarthy Vahey, for one, in a difficult position.
The concern held by many, though, is that by not pushing back against the reduction, the hit to Fairfield will now be greater than it otherwise would have been.
